Traditionally it had to be a solicitor but a little-known rule change means anyone can now go directly to a barrister for advice without having to go through a solicitor.
Lisa Smith is a local barrister with more than 20 year’s experience working both in chambers in London as a traditional barrister and in local and national solicitors’ offices. By having the right to conduct litigation Lisa is authorised not only to advise and draft documents but also to perform all the administrative and procedural functions previously undertaken only by solicitors. She can also provide you with expert representation in court if necessary. ‘Cutting out the middleman’ by going direct to a barrister and doing some of the work yourself if you wish gives complete control and flexibility and may mean a big saving in costs.
You instruct Lisa on a task-by-task basis, agreeing fees in advance, and for as much or as little of the work as you require. She understands family law from both the advocate’s and the solicitor’s perspective and can conduct the whole case or just advise as and when you need it.
Lisa has set up her own legal practice in Ampthill to provide this service in the local area. She is a member of both Resolution and the Family Law Bar Association which places a professional obligation on her to minimise costs and strive to assist the parties to reach agreement through all available means.
Lisa believes strongly that Court proceedings are absolutely a last resort. In family cases there are no ‘winners’; it is a difficult and stressful time for all involved. By far the best resolution is a negotiated agreement that ensures the needs of any children are met appropriately and provides the best outcome possible in the circumstances. Expert advice at the outset, so you are aware of the ‘best- and worst-case scenarios’ and how the court would approach your case allows you to explore all possible resolutions and makes finding a compromise with your partner much more likely.
Direct Access to a family law barrister can therefore be a ‘fast track to resolution. Lisa offers a free initial consultation, with no obligation, via email, by telephone or face to face meeting so you can consider your case together in general terms, discuss your options and the costs implications and make an informed decision on how to proceed.
